When a schedule for the 7th Annual 2024 Long Beach Boys’ Varsity Water Polo Tournament is available, could an admin/editor of that tournament post it here?
South Coast tournament has traditionally been the 2nd weekend (Thursday-Saturday) in September, making it 12th-14th this year.(?)
Is there any change to that this year? A preliminary schedule for one HS has this listed as the 19th-21st.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can confirm.
This year’s South Coast Tournament will be held from September 12 through 14. JSerra and Sacred Heart Prep, likely to be two of the top three or four teams in the country, will play a non-league game at JSerra on September 11.
Don’t know if you saw this, the link is:
Thank you for posting the schedule. Does anyone know the format of this tournament? The “Invite” bracket of 14 teams appears to have a pre-arranged schedule that does not culminate in a final match. Long Beach Wilson is only playing on Friday – two games, against Westlake and Servite. The schedule keeps 14 games per day with Buena of Ventura and La Jolla playing three games on Saturday (including facing each other). Long Beach Wilson, Westlake and Palos Verdes played in the 2023 CIF-SS Div. 1 playoff tourney, while last year’s CIF-SS Div. 2 champ San Marcos is also here. Thank you again.
Santa Barbara Invite Schedule
As I understand it, there are two divisions of the LB event. The Invite Bracket is “college-style” or “dual-meet” style, where teams ask for specific matchups. By contrast the Gold Bracket division is a seeded event that does culminate in placement/classification.
Who are the other participants for the South Coast Tournament ? Would be interesting to watch top teams/players and how they matchup against each other this early in the season.
See the “Unofficial Rankings” thread for a list of the schools participating in the South Coast Tournament. Almost all of the top schools are participating.
Results of the Long Beach Boys Varsity Water Polo Tournament (Aug. 30-31):
- "Gold” Bracket: Semi-finals: El Segundo 13, Downey 12; Redondo 12, Ventura 9. Third: Downey 13, Ventura 12. Final: El Segundo 8, Redondo 7 (at Long Beach City College).
NOTE: This is the second straight Labor Day Weekend tournament championship for El Segundo. Last year, they won the Corona Invitational, held at Eleanor Roosevelt High School. - "Invite” Bracket: La Jolla finished with the best record having gone 5-0, the only undefeated team (except for Long Beach Wilson, 2-0, playing on Friday only). Too bad Long Beach Wilson and La Jolla didn’t play each other. It would have been a good game. (Buena of Ventura went 4-1, with its only loss to La Jolla.)
Here is a link to the schedule for this weekend’s Roche Invitational:
Here are my predictions, often wrong, for this weekend’s Roche Invitational:
- La Jolla
- Rio Americano. The likely semifinal game between Rio Americano and Menlo should be close. Three of Menlo’s best players are freshmen. Menlo should get better as the season progresses.
- Menlo
- Davis. It won’t surprise me if Redwood beats Davis in the quarterfinals.
- San Ramon Valley
- Saint Ignatius
- Redwood
- Buchanan
Here are my predictions, often wrong, for this weekend’s Santa Barbara Invitational:
- Corona del Mar. If the early games go according to form, CdM will have a tough quarterfinal game against Mira Costa. Mira Costa should be seeded higher than No. 8.
- Mater Dei. The likely semifinal game between MD and Bellarmine could go either way.
- Bellarmine. The likely 3rd place game between Bellarmine and Archie Williams could go either way.
- Archie Williams
- Mira Costa
- San Marcos
- Huntington Beach
- Crean Lutheran
It should be interesting as many coaches used to treat these early season tournaments as tune-ups and testing grounds for their new teams and often not as concerned about the final score. Now, with the computer ranking systems, all games seem to matter towards post season opportunities.
Round of 16 “upsets” - St Francis over HB; San Marcos over Laguna
Round of 8- CDM and Mira Costa close, possible upset; MD v St Francis–MD, but tight. Bellarmine by 4 over San Marcos; Archie v Crean, 1 goal either way.
SEMIS- CDM/Mira Costa win going away; Bellarmine over MD by 3
Finals- CDM easily or Mira Costa TIGHT over Bellarmine
- CDM or Mira Costa if upset in quarterfinals
- Bellarmine
- Mater Dei
- Archie Williams
- Mira Costa (or CDM)
- San Marcos
- Crean Lutheran
- St Francis
Nice job Westlake— go get em.
Has the South Coast Tournament schedule been posted?
I’m not familiar with the computer ranking system, what would matter more, the overall result in the tournament or the number of W/L? I noticed some teams doing as you mentioned, and maybe more willing to take an early loss for a better overall record.
Here is a copy of the Google document for next weekend’s South Coast Tournament. This tournament is loaded with good teams.
