San Diego County Cup

Does anyone know when the schedule usually comes out for this tournament? I know games start on Friday and lots of teams travel to SD so hoping it comes out sooner than normal weekend tournaments

Last year they were posted publicly on Friday, April 26. That was exactly one week before the first games of the tournament. It should also be noted that multiple schedules were edited during the week leading up to competition, with final edits being completed on 4/30/2024, three days before the tournament kicked off.

Here is the link to last year’s schedule: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vQVFxv29txV8L5dGJVi11OHOXCOpLoCe-uJkflrQu9lAzX-vctR2k_IQGcc1QanTn9Q-xW7oVIKD_-s/pubhtml#

If you click across the age groups at the top, you can see the last edit dates.

Any predictions for these games?

Ooooh I can try to sit down tonight and go through the top divisions. I’ll try and do a similar write up as I did on CalCup.

Are you going to do girls also?

Here is my crack at it:

In 10u Coed AA, if Del Mar Blue is actually Del Mar Blue, they will cruise to the title. That 10u team is so dominant that if they were entered in 12u A, they’d likely win 12u A.

  1. Del Mar
  2. Patriot
  3. Commerce
  4. SOCAL

12u AA Girls will see SB 805 cement their hold atop that division. They are the team to beat, but this is a great slate of competitors. I’m looking forward to seeing Los Al, San Clemente, and Back Bay fight it out against those who were in Cal Cup.

  1. SB805
  2. Patriot
  3. Los Alamitos
  4. Lamorinda

For 12u AA Boys, I’m thinking Newport comes away with the gold medals. They’ve seemed to have had Patriot’s and Mission’s number all year. They had no problem dispatching Del Mar recently. I’m expecting good showings from SOCAL, CCU, and Lamorinda, but not so good that Newport won’t handle them. Newport has a fatal match-up deficiency versus Vanguard, but Vanguard isn’t at SD County Cup.

  1. Newport Beach
  2. Del Mar
  3. Mission
  4. SOCAL

14u AA Girls will see Newport win because they will score more points than the teams they face on this particular weekend.

  1. Newport Beach
  2. SB805
  3. Lamorinda
  4. South Coast

The 14u AA Boys division will go to Del Mar. CIU and Patriot aren’t at SD County Cup. CCU has taken Del Mar to a shootout twice, and come up on the short end twice. Lamorinda has a shot but my money would be on Del Mar to end atop the podium when all is said and done.

  1. Del Mar
  2. CC United
  3. Lamorinda
  4. SD Shores

In 14U Girls AA, if Patriot Navy is their true 14U A - the ones that have been beating top 20 18U teams recently - they will win and they won’t have a close game. Newport may have been hiding their A also, because ODP results and selections do not square with recent 14U tourney results otherwise, but I don’t think it will matter.

Marco,

You probably should stick with making predictions for boys

For 14U girls, SB 805 and Lamo cannot be both in the top 4- it is impossible. And the fact that you did not mention Patriots Navy is very strange, as was already explained by NLM.

I have no idea about the 14u Girl’s landscape and see that you are correct in the Lamo / SB 805 bracketing. I’m leaving my predictions unaltered even if they are impossible.

Marco,

I admire your honesty and commitment to your predictions.
Cheers!

P.S. Maybe I was too fast to call your prediction impossible - the organizers could always change the bracket, so there is always a chance

CIU vs Greenwich will be the game to watch on Friday for the 12U AA side.

That is a good one. The other Friday 12u AA Boys games I’m looking forward to are Temple City vs Patriot at 3PM and Lamorinda A vs North Irvine Black at 8:15PM.

I agree, North Irvine and Lamorinda will be a great game, have you seen Lamorinda play this year?

Patriot, being ranked 5th should win against Temple City.

I have not seen Lamorinda play this year. Lamorinda’s results put them roughly on the level of Stanford, and I’ve seen multiple Stanford games this season, but that is about as much as I know.

As for Temple City, they beat Patriot at the Vanguard Showcase, and Patriot’s big guns were all there. IDK if some were sick or playing with other health issues, but they were there, and capped up, and they lost to Temple City. SD County Cup will be a chance to see if it was a fluke or if Temple City is that good.

12U - Lamorinda lost one of their best players to Stanford.

14u AA Boys - I thought Stanford has beaten Lamo 2 times in the last 6 weeks and 680 beat them once. 680 also beat CCU.

That’s right. Do you have the link of the results of Vanguard Showcase? I’d love to see the outcome of that tournament.

For better or worse, I have a habit of biasing predictions for games played in Southern California by how I’ve seen teams perform in South California. Referees are a big part of this sport, and I believe referees in different regions call games differently.

That said, your healthy skepticism is not at all unwelcome. I’m always happy to talk water polo.
