Here are my predictions for the South Coast Tournament. If I’ve heard that a school will or may be missing one or more key players, I list that information. This tournament may include two games between some of the greatest rivals in high school water polo: Newport Harbor vs. Corona del Mar (a possible quarterfinal game) and Miramonte vs. Campolindo (a possible third-round game).

  1. Newport Harbor. Newport will be missing center defender Santino Rossi, a transfer from Mater Dei. He is eligible to play after September 17. I heard Connor Ohl returned to action on Monday.
  2. JSerra. JSerra may be missing as many as 6 of its better players: Connor Colman (a transfer from Los Alamitos), Brian Barnuevo (a transfer from Mater Dei), Gavin Conant, Taylor Bell, Porter Birdsall, and Dalton Haggard. Colman and Barnuevo are eligible to play after September 17. The other players I listed are recovering from injuries.
  3. Harvard-Westlake. The likely quarterfinal game between Harvard-Westlake and Sacred Heart Prep will be close.
  4. Oaks Christian. Cathedral Catholic could beat Oaks Christian in the quarterfinals.
  5. Sacred Heart Prep. Sacred Heart is missing two starters recovering from injuries: Gates Gamble and center defender/attacker Karl Sylvester.
  6. De La Salle. De La Salle should give JSerra a good game in the quarterfinals.
  7. Cathedral Catholic
  8. Corona del Mar. It won’t surprise me if Loyola beats Corona del Mar in the third round.
  9. Bishop’s
  10. Loyola
  11. Mater Dei. Mater Dei is missing goalie Morgan Crichton, a transfer from Long Beach Wilson. He is eligible to play after September 17.
  12. Campolindo
  13. Foothill
  14. Miramonte. Miramonte is missing its best player, center defender Patrick Stice (Cal), and Campolindo transfer Grayson Boies. Boies is eligible to play after September 24. Stice is recovering from an injury. Because Miramonte will be playing without Stice, I give a slight edge to Campolindo in its likely third-round game against Miramonte.
  15. Bellarmine
  16. Mira Costa
  17. Santa Margarita. It won’t surprise me if Santa Margarita finishes in the top 12.
  18. Long Beach Wilson
  19. San Clemente
  20. San Marcos

In recent years some of the south coast tournament has been streamed. Does anyone know if this year will be streamed and have a link?

Today’s quarterfinal games at the South Coast Tournament:

Newport Harbor vs. Corona del Mar
JSerra vs. De La Salle
Oaks Christian vs. Miramonte
Harvard-Westlake vs. Mater Dei

With two wins yesterday, JSerra extends its winning streak to 38 games.

This is still Newport’s tournament to loose as I was told they have 3 teams in rotation and all 3 could finish top 3. Harvard-Westlake vs. Mater Dei will be a good match-up to watch. Any streaming links?

Thoughts from Edison HS match-ups (Day 1

Oaks Christian: Plethora of attackers led by Camden Kocur, Wyatt Williamson, Saul Biddle, and Kane Fogg. Darian Wang has been solid as well. Production from the middle of the pool (Max Burstein) and goalie will be key. Uncommitted utility Jaden Winters had a heck of a day.

Miramonte: Despite Cal commit Patrick Spice being out (hand), the Mats were solid at both ends. Never thought I would see 30s on cap numbers. Junior center Tristan Tucker was dominant. Brown commit Griffen Tunney ripped shots from perimeter. Brock Bliss was a catalyst at both ends. Liked sophs Trent Smith and Brady Hasset.

Campolindo: Played without Hayden O’Hare. Tremendous sophomore class led by Ellis Culleton, Cade O’Hare, William Maguy and juniors Jack Elder and Samuel Storrs. Speed and shooting. Goalie Drew DeFrancisci was solid.

Cathedral Catholic: Very young team. Need more production from the middle of the pool. Zone D was a factor. Liked juniors Max Arnold (shooter), Colin McPhail (utility). Sophs who had moments were Jett Taylor, Hudson Tweed, etc…Defenses did a nice job on stud soph Braylen Axline.

LB Wilson: Center Enzo Brigagliano getting into foul trouble against Campo was an issue. Tight game until 2nd half. Keegan Abing is a grinder. Fernando Pekal Rejon, Eli Vince, and sophomore Nico Tranontano had some good moments.

Los Alamitos: Played Miramonte tough for a 1/2. Fast and grinding team. Elijah Webb, Sebastian Mok, Noah Garrison, Nathan Jorge, and Weston Swank had some good moments.

Edison: Ran into a buzz saw against CC, but I like the motor and skill of junior Micah Baltzer and junior goalie Langford Mathew had some impressive stops.

Alta Loma: Senior attacker Paco Lopez is one to watch…aggressive/skilled attacker. They have some intriguing sops in Hayden Barrett, Jordan Stute, and Jackson Brumbaugh. Goalie is an athlete.

Will be at San Juan Hills today…

Today’s semifinals games:

Newport Harbor vs. Harvard-Westlake. Connor Kim won’t play for Harvard-Westlake after sustaining an injury in yesterday’s game against Mater Dei.

JSerra vs. Oaks Christian. Taylor Bell and Porter Birdsall have resumed playing for JSerra.

5-8 games:

Corona del Mar vs. Mater Dei. Mater Dei goalie David Yacoub is eligible to play.

De La Salle vs. Miramonte. A rematch of last year’s NCS championship game.

9-12 games:

Loyola vs. Sacred Heart

Bishop’s vs. Cathedral Catholic. A rematch of last year’s San Diego Section championship game.

13-16 games:

San Clemente vs. Foothill
Bellarmine vs. Campolindo

Great games today at CDM pool. Most likely will witness first of few JSerra-Newport championship match of the season.

Newport with a 17-6 win over HW after HW’s wheels came off early. Oaks played JSerra tough in a back and forth game with some good perimeter shots but JS held on with a 1-point win. Should be a good final and a good 3rd place game.

The battle for first won’t be interesting this year…its Newport with zero challengers, then everyone else battling for second spot. Newport dominated JS today

What were the scores of championship games? The excel sheet does not show the scores.

I can tell you the final match: Newport Harbor 14, JSerra 6.

Their Junior class is too deep, too disciplined. It will be hard to beat them this year!

Anyone know if Gavin Conant is injured or sitting out for JSerra? They lost 14-6 and I didn’t see Conant play, I know he could have definitely contributed.

He’s recovering from an injury.
