Here is the link to the website for the 2024 CIF Northern and Southern California Regional Championship Tournaments:
Still waiting for CIF to provide a coherent explanation as to why the Regional event makes sense for anyone other than CIFâs coffers. So we are taking teams that lost in the semis or won in a lower division and we are going to repackage it up and pretend itâs meaningful.
NorCal and SoCal boys play in the same season. Provide a true CIF State Championship like you do in other sports.
They wonât do it because the girls play different seasons in NorCal and SoCal and if they canât do it for both, then neither of them get a state tournament. And yes the regional event is a complete waste of time. The Southern Section voted against it when it was implemented
So âequityâ in a nutshell
Girls canât have states (for a valid reason) so boys canât either
Weak! Let them play
We need teams to start opting out in order to get rid of it. Or only take winners of each division. Thereâs no reason 4th place teams are playing rematch games of teams they lost to a week ago.
If JSerra and Oaks Christian win their SoCal Regional Division I quarter-final games on Tuesday, they will face each other in the semi-finals on Thursday. That would make it their seventh meeting of the year. That has to be some kind of record. (JSerra has won all six games so far.)
Here are my predictions, often wrong, for the 2024 Northern and Southern California Regional Championship Tournaments. I donât know enough about the schools participating in the Division 3 Tournaments to comment on those tournaments.
NorCal Boysâ Division 1. This Division will be highly competitive, with 6 schools in my top 20 list.
- Sacred Heart. I wonât be surprised if De La Salle wins the tournament.
- De La Salle. De La Salle will have a tough game against Campolindo or St. Francis in the semifinals.
- Miramonte. Miramonte has to beat a solid Archie Williams team to reach the semifinals. Miramonte is good enough to win the tournament.
(3.). Campolindo. The first-round game between Campolindo and St. Francis could go either way.
NorCal Boysâ Division 2
- Redwood. The likely championship game between Redwood and Menlo will be close. Redwood has a top 20 team.
- Menlo
- Clovis West
(3.). Davis
NorCal Girlsâ Division 1
- Sacred Heart
- Arroyo Grande
- Miramonte. The first-round game between Miramonte and Campolindo could go either way.
(3.). Carondelet
NorCal Girlsâ Division 2
- Clovis East
- Leland
- Davis
(3.) Stevenson
SoCal Boysâ Division 1
- Newport Harbor. The likely championship game between Newport and JSerra will be close. I give the slight edge to Newport because it has a deeper and stronger bench.
- JSerra
- Oaks Christian
(3.) Cathedral Catholic
SoCal Boysâ Division 2
- Mira Costa
- Carlsbad
- Brea Olinda
(3.) Santana
At least a chance some teams may be shorthanded on Saturday for lost Thanksgiving travelers.
The heavy rains predicted for parts of Northern California could affect some of the games scheduled to be played on Thursday.
The CIF Committee needs to have some water polo people involved. First and foremost, sending La Jolla to Oaks Christian on a Tuesday is ludicrous. That is a 4hr drive there and backâon a school day for that matter. Have Westlake play Oaks Christian (backyard brawl) and then send La Jolla to Newport. Itâs not that hard.
It is ridiculous that the boys canât have a State Championship because the girls donât. The girls have the option of having a State Championship, but it is their decision to play the sport in different seasons. Why should the boys be penalized for that?
Absent having an eventual State Championship, the Regionals is a complete waste of time IMHO.
swimcoach, who is choosing to play in different seasons? Is it norcal for wanting to play in fall, or socal for wanting to play in winter? Is there enough pool space for boys and girls to play in the same season? It seems to be working in norcal, but maybe not good enough for socal?
I believe the girls donât play in the winter up north because of the weather. In the south, having the girls go during the fall would be a nightmare in terms of pool space and officials .
Swimcoach, agreed. Make it a spring sport for both.
Bracket Logistics Brutality:
La Jolla driving to Oaks today.
Westlake to Newport.
CDM to Cathedral.
Bishops to JSerra.
Spring is a no go due to swimming.
I can see your point that this can be viewed as brutal. Itâs also really exciting and memorable as a team to travel a long way to battle it out with a team you typically wouldnât match up against in the post season. I could imagine the kids from La Jolla are frothing to go to Oaks to battle it out on a weeknight, same with Westlake. Itâs a big honor for some of these teams just to be in the game. Maybe iâm just a little nostalgic now that my kid has moved onâŚ

Swimcoach, you have been around long enough to know that the girls did not "pickâ to be in different seasons.
A very easy solution would be for the boys to become men, and say, 'hey let the girls play in the fall, both in NorCal and Socal, and us âmenâ will play in the winter, because we can handle the cold better. But we all know the boys donât want to do that, and they will stick with their âwarmâ fall season, and let the girls take the winter, down here in Socal.
In Socal we donât have enough pools and officials to run both programs in same season, and you know that.
Another thing, the girls could not care less if the boys had their State Championships. More power to them
My point is, why should the boys be penalized just because the girls donât have a true State Championship? I imagine that the girls can figure it out if they want to, with either Northern California moving their season to the Winter Quarter or Southern California moving theirs to the Fall.
As far as logistics go, if the Northern California teams can both play in the same season (Fall), then why canât the Southern California teams? Is there really more relative pool space available up North compared to the South?
Maybe the girls could care less about the boys having a true State Championship, but I guarantee you that they would like to play for one themselves.
