Transfer Portal

I think we have seen most of the transfer volume for this off season aside from a few question marks left.

The freshman from Fordham:

  • I predict both Provenziani and Toth will stay at Fordham. While the chance to leave will be enticing, I think the group is tight knit and they will both stay to run it back with the team that gave them the opportunity to play in the U.S. However, if next year is a down year for Fordham, I think they will seriously consider it next year.

The freshman from LBSU:

  • My sources tell me Corbin Stanley is seriously considering entering the portal. My gut says that whatever he decides to do, Gabi Acosta will follow. I’m sure Arroyo is having extensive conversations with both players and doing everything in his power to convince them to stay. I believe the biggest question mark for this team is at the goalie position. It is not a secret that the Class of 2025 is a weak class, particularly at the goalie position. I’m not sure if Arroyo has an international coming in, but Gabe Haddad and their other backup have played only a handful of minutes and are simply not gonna cut it. If LBSU has a good international goalie coming in and both players stay, I think they can compete with Stanford and Cal next year, who will both be weaker. My gut says both enter the portal in the next week, but who knows…

At least 3 of them are graduating this year but took a redshirt year and have one year remaining. They would be Grad Students next year if they can find a home. Probably looking to get a graduate degree from another school to bolster their resume. Only two of them have 2 years remaining.

Chase Wilson to Cal, decent pickup for Kirk

He’s a dynamic center with and without the ball.

Luke Bachler is transferring from UCSB to Cal. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Cal can essentially stop recruiting domestically and use the portal from now on.

Where is the dislike button?

And then there is this…

Court rules that JC does not count against D1/NCAA eligibility.

Well, shit. Obviously, college sports as we knew them just a few short years ago and for a century before are completely over.

“So long as he receives an appropriate NIL package, I expect to see him in the black and gold for as long as he has eligibility remaining…”

As a former college athlete and parent of college (and soon to be) athletes, I’ll speak for myself: I am uninterested in watching 24 year olds playing in college. Sure there are exceptions but I believe we know the answer to the question: can 24 year olds beat 19 year olds. This is not hyperbole either; see college hockey player avg age = 23.

To be clear and bringing back a phrase from the 90’s: don’t hate the player, hate the game. People will do what they’re incentivized to do. And I don’t blame anyone for doing what’s best for them. I’m certainly not some “good old days” guy either. Plenty of issues with the previous system, but reasonable people can agree that this current environment is problematic.

My sincere hope is rationality and common sense will prevail. I don’t know that I would bet on that though!

I could see this being a good thing in the future. It would be rocky to start but with the roster limits, rather than the current redshirt year. You could play at a CC go to school for next to nothing get a year or two of credit and then have 3-4 years left in eligibility. Now there are some coaches who will want to have you commit to playing all 3-4 years but for boys that is easy they can graduate in winter so they only have to pay for one semester of their last year. I think CBU graduated 3 guys just after the season ended.

Good point @rolled1. We are living in interesting times!

Also gives kids a chance to get guaranteed admission or even general admission to college based off their academic performance at the CC level VS their academic performance in High School

Getit2theset: I agree with you. I was a 17 year-old freshman when I first competed in college. All of my freshmen teammates were either 17 or 18 and the seniors were either 21 or 22. IMHO, having to compete against 24-year-old or 25-year-old seniors is not what NCAA sports are about.

That being said, I know that times are changing quickly and and I do not begrudge the current athletes from doing whatever benefits them. I just have sympathy for the younger athletes who are either competing for a roster spot or competing against players with a 3 or 4 year relative age advantage.

Seems unambiguously bad from a life-outside-polo perspective. Worse education at CC than 4 year, and if “college” takes 5+ years that’s a year of foregone income, and a delay on adulthood more broadly. All for a zero-sum arms race against redshirters and international “amateurs”. Bad trend.

Yup watched a game with 18 year old kids guarding 24 year old Jeremie Cote was interesting. Hey some did well but his neck was thicker than their thighs.

Curious how everyone feels about the Olympic deferments that enable 24 / 25 year old players playing their Senior season. Quite a few in the past on the Women’s side.
The unlimited National Team deferments gives players 3-4 years of National team training in addition to their college playing; training at a vastly superior level to JC.
ex: Ryann Neushel
2018 - HS grad
2019 - Freshman
2020 - National team deferment
2021 - National team deferment
2022 - Sophomore
2023 - Junior
2024 - National Team deferment
2025 - Senior season at age 25

I disagree that CC education during the first two years of college is worse than at a 4 year. CC is being taught by full time professors while most general ed classes at a 4 year are taught by grad assistants, etc.
