Transfer Portal

Here’s a thread about the transfer portal for this season.

I have been told that WCC Player of the Year Mihailo Vukazic has entered the transfer portal with one year of eligibility remaining. It looks like it will be between USC and UCLA, with Stanford out of the mix.

Wow… If true, that will be a game changer for whichever team lands him. A position of need for both schools going into next season.

Surprised Cal not also in the mix, but I suppose he wants to play for a title contender and the Bears still have too many question marks.

I am not a fan of UOP, but I dislike the portal, at least how it has worked so far.
It is a shame that say Long Beach should worry every year about retaining their excellent freshmen imports, etc.

Can confirm he is in the transfer portal along with a fair share of other athletes across all three divisions.

There are four who would be utilizing eligibility as graduate students

When should we expect most athletes to enter by? Is there an advantage to going in early?

I believe we should have a good idea in the next 10 days. Some athletes just finished their season and weren’t eligible to enter until yesterday morning.

The transfer portal is open from now until December 30. So anyone who enters during that time is eligible to transfer. After that Dec 30 date, they need to wait for the next window (May 1)

My guess is that available scholarship money will go down with time so the earlier window is a better option.

Thank you for explaining that ehpolo!

I thought there is only one window for men (Dec 1 - 30 after finished playing) and May 1 - May 30 is for women?

At least that is what this reads →

The tier two schools have now become junior colleges for the tier one programs. What a mess.

From the players’ perspective, this is a good thing. Players who were overlooked or whose talents bloomed in their early college years, or who are deep on the bench and not getting much playing time, can move to a better situation for themselves. Non-athletes can transfer from school to school with no penalties to find the best fit. Why not athletes?

If you look at the same chart, you’ll see that Spring Sports have a Fall window and Fall sports have a Spring window.

It’s rare to see a mid year transfer, but I have personally seen it happen before on the women’s side.

There was an instance where Ally Batenborst (volleyball) transferred to USC upon the conclusion of her season at Nebraska. She immediately competed for USC’s Beach Volleyball team (spring sport) while utilizing her final year of eligibility for indoor volleyball for the Women of Troy this Fall

Rumor is at least two from UCSB are in the T portal.

There are a lot of reasons why transferring for athletic reasons is different that academic reasons. Not to say its right or wrong just not the same

Agreed. But these are mostly kids, 18-23. (Maybe a little older for the foreigners.) Water polo stability or parity aside, I don’t see how it’s a good idea to lock them into a bad situation or prevent them from finding a better one. And academic vs. athletic reasons may not be separable. A kid sitting on the bench at a D1 school might decide he’d rather be a starter a D3 school and a Georgetown or MIT degree and have fun playing.

I think there is a difference between undergrad transfers and graduate transfers. Grad transfers have completed their journey at their school and have eligibility remaining, so go use it elsewhere.
The problem with the transfer portal is that it’s a one-way street. The best players from the Big West / WCC look to the MPSF but bench riders at the MPSF stay put.

Maybe not this year due to roster cuts. I would hope that the MPSF coaches have given the players they plan on cutting a chance to jump in the portal. I guess it is not the coaches job to let them know they should see it coming.

I believe that there are different portal restrictions for graduate students who have remaining eligibity. I think that they either have additional windows or they are bigger than those for undergrads.

I also think that the portal system is sort of a one way street. For most kids, their top priorities are to get into the best school that they can and to possibly win a National Championship. Sure, there are players who absolutely love the game and want to play as much as they can, but I just do not see that many players at top tier schools transferring to “lesser” programs where they may be able to get more playing time at.

Yeah that is probably the case for 99 percent of them. Not many will go from USC to UCSB. I could see leaving a central valley school for a coastal school of similar prestige but not leaving a UCLA or USC to go to a lesser school, unless they care more about playing.
