I don’t recall previous years being this well attended. This feels like Club Champs. Kudos to the organizers!

It was great the event was so well attended. Thank you to the event organizers and to all the athletes and their families who made the trip. I’m still going through the results, but there is one in particular that topped my attention. Diablo 12u girls played great. @wpolo93 took a lot of heat in the other thread about his advocacy for that team, and those girls proved him right.

Agree they played really well. I got to see most of the games.

How about 805 in 18U Girls…and I am talking about he 805B team

Here is the recap! Wasn’t able to go to all venues and games, but it was a fun weekend out in the IE!

10u coed
3rd place game: Socal over SD Shores 12-7
1st place game: Commerce over Patriot 8.4-8.3

Commerce and Patriot were a step above everyone else. In the final Patriot took a commanding lead. I believe it was 7-3 at one point. Then Commerce clawed their way back and some smart anticipating by their center got the Patriot goalie in trouble with two ball unders in the second half. Commerce had the momentum and won the shootout. Socal is the clear third team, and from what I understand didn’t have their best player available for this tournament. Should be a good top 3 going into JOs, right behind Del Mar. SD Shores, Tsunami and Foothill looked very good on for COED JOs.

I predicted the top 3 teams correctly, just in the wrong order.

12u girls
3rd place game: Patriot over Lamo 14-9
1st place game: 805 over Diablo 7-5

I had the top 4 predicted correctly, just in the wrong order. Diablo upset Patriot in the semis. Along with 805 and Back Bay, I think those teams should be favorites going into JOs. The level of play at the 12u girls top teams was very high. The level of reffing was questionable. Didn’t get to see the actual medal games, but if anyone did, please give us some insight!

14u girls
3rd place game: Diablo over Lamo 11-10
1st place game: South Coast over Newport in a shootout.

I had this predicted completely wrong! Where did Diablo and South Coast come from?! What an exciting parity at the 14u level this season. Should be a fun JOs with lots of upsets. Lots of teams in the mix for the top 8, it’ll be interesting to see who takes down who! I didn’t see much of this age group this weekend.

16u girls
3rd place game: Patriot over Regency 11-4
1st place game: 805 over Lamo 9-7

This division can go everywhere. I was surprised by the big loss Regency had to Patriot in the third place game. All games to that point had been really close. There’s lots of teams in the mix here that didn’t make the medal games like Socal, Diablo, 680, SD Shores and Odin. I believe that the Patriot team was their 14u navy team, so the question is will they be in the mix at JOs as well? Overall, great showing by 805. They played in control every game.

18u girls
3rd place game: SET over Lamo 12-6
1st place game: 805 over Regency 11-9
805 has the top HS girls club program in this tournament. Both on 16u and 18u they have size, speed, IQ. They really played in complete control. I had predicted a stronger showing by Legacy, but they fell to 805 and with no backdoor they were out of contention. Give them a different schedule and they might play in that final game.

12u boys
3rd place game: 805 over CHAWP 9-3
1st place game: Socal over SD Shores 12-4

Socal was dominant all weekend. They have good size, play smart and quick and have a couple studs. One of their best players is still a 10u. Will he play 12u or 10u at JOs, or both? It’ll be interesting to see how Socal can continue developing this group. They have some really big kids at 10u, so the future of their boys program is in good hands. I was surprised 805 beat Commerce in a shootout.

14u boys
3rd place game: Central Coast over SD Shores B 11-10
1st place game: SD Shores A over Socal 9-5
Central Coast taking out North Irvine was impressive. LA Premier ended up not participating, neither did Carlsbad. Socal and SD Shores were the best teams in the division, with SD Shores having a very deep 14u group. SD Shores shut down Socal’s Shawn Zhou in the final and Socal wasn’t able to get much offense going. With SD Shores, Del Mar and La Jolla, does San Diego have the deepest 14u boys class this year?

16u boys
3rd place game: SD Shores over Southern 10-6
1st place game: Socal over Commerce 10-9
The first final I had predicted correctly! Yay! I didn’t get to see any 16u games this weekend so if anybody has any insight, please drop your knowledge below!

18u boys
3rd place game: Clovis over SD Shores 12-8
1st place game: CHAWP over Foothill 11-8
I had discounted CHAWP in this age group, thinking Channel Islands would upset them in the group stage. That didn’t happen, but Channel Islands was able to give CHAWP their closest game of the tournament. CIU probably could have played in the medal games had they been seeded differently. Very impressed by CHAWPs size and pure power.

Overall what a good weekend. Good to see teams play actual meaningful games. You could tell players cared and played with emotion, especially in the semifinals and finals. Can’t wait to see what SD County Cup has in store for us in two weeks!

A full Legacy squad was and still is in Malta playing in the international easter tournament, some good youth level teams GB, Spain, Hungary, etc. More than 1/2 the Legacy starters and many key contributors missed the CalCup Finals weekend. I don’t know, but I expect other teams also were missing some talent given it was spring break for many schools.

Witnessed some horrific coaching behavior during some 16u girls games, then said coach was not present for last game of the tournament. Hard to see girls get yelled at like that- no one should allow that to happen.

Hi, Club Director here! My advice would be to contact their club director and let them know what you witnessed. We need this type of communication as a sport to make change happen.

Who was missing from the Legacy 18s team?

For 18U Girls - Legacy has 15+ players in Malta including 4 seniors (Kyla (Goalie), Kate, Michelle, CC) + Eve and many other key contributors im probably forgetting about. There’s also some Legacy players who rostered with 6/8.

Im sure other 18U teams were also missing players.
