CIFSS Open and Division 1 teams

Final - Santa Margarita 13, Buena 10

Final: Mater Dei - 15 Foothill - 12

CDM 13 - San Marcos 9

Should be a very exciting game to watch Tuesday CDM at HW. It’s anyone’s game to go to Semis and face Newport.

HW should handle CDM comfortably

One interesting thing about Tuesday’s games is that in three of the four contests the teams haven’t played each other all year. Only JSerra vs. Loyola has prior meetings – JSerra winning on 9/19, 11-7, and on 10/18, 15-7.

Open Division Round 3 predictions:

Newport 12 - Santa Margarita 6
JSerra 10 - Loyola 8
Oaks 9 - Mater Dei 6
HW 7 - CDM 8 Upset Alert

Pool Play resumes on Tuesday for the CIF-SS Open Division playoffs. Though the designation isn’t being used officially, these are functionally quarter-final matches. Here’s some historical fun facts on the four matchups (all references are to the top-level only, currently known as Open Division):

Harvard vs. Corona del Mar. Corona del Mar, at 100 wins all-time (100-38), is trying to do what they did last year – positioned at #5, they are trying to travel to #4 and upset them. The two teams have a rich playoff history. They first met in 1973, but they haven’t met since 2014. All-time: Harvard, 4 wins; CDM, 3 wins.

Newport Harbor vs. Santa Margarita. A “quarter-final” match between these two teams is becoming a habit. They met in the quarter-finals last year and also in 2017. They also met in a “Sweet 16” game in 2010. Newport Harbor has won the three previous encounters.

Oaks Christian vs. Mater Dei. This is the only match in which the two teams have actually faced each other previously in the finals. In 2017, Mater Dei won that final match, 13-9. In 2018, Oaks Christian got some revenge, winning a quarter-final pairing. They haven’t played each other since then in the playoffs.

JSerra vs. Loyola. This is the first meeting in the playoffs between these teams. Loyola is 25-29 all-time (13th most wins), first qualifying in 1992. JSerra is 6-4 all-time, but with a title in 2023, and first appearing in 2011.

Wow, called the upset. CDM pulls the W congrats!

According to sources the reffing was very poor against Mater Dei last night. Still a great game!!

From my experience not knowing what refs got the gig, Refs in the Ventura and North LA area are really bad, like really bad! So I don’t doubt it but usually they are equally bad to both teams so the best team wins.

Open Division Semis Prediction:

JSerra 10 - Oaks 9
These two teams have played 5 times this season with JS taking all 5, but not by much. Margins have been 3, 1, 1, 4 and 3 points. Not easy beating a good team, a great player (Kocur) and a great coach (Kocur again) 6 times in a season, but JS is just deeper. JS is too strong in the middle (Anderson) and at the perimeter (Bell).

Newport Harbor 12 - CDM 8
These two teams played once this season with Newport winning 16-9 (score discrepancy on different sites, but both show a 7 goal spread). Interesting note: Newport will be the home team (High Seed), but the game will be played at CDM, which has been an alternate home pool for Newport this season due to their pool remodel. If you are CDM you like being the underdog playing your cross-town rival in the CIF Semis, but Harlan (CDM) won’t be able to score enough goals to overcome the depth of Newport. Newport scores in bunches but it’s their defense that makes them tough. Newport’s smallest margin of victory this season - 5 goals.

What I do know…The CIF Finals will once again be a Private vs. Public matchup.

Ventura/Santa Barbara refs always seem to favor their local teams. It’s too bad referee assignments aren’t more fair. CIF games in V/SB usually get two local refs and the visitors are at a huge disadvantage.
