Very similar to how Tom Leggett went to an military academy school with a water polo team for his gap year. Came in as a freshmen ready to go!

Yep. Kids go to The Hill School before going into the Naval Academy.

Yes, Tom scored 144 goals in 22 games at the hill school for his fifth year of high school water polo.

That might make water polo sense. But as educational institutions, Stanford is one of the most selective universities in the country, while most community colleges or other 2 years schools are serving students who are not ready for the academic work at a four year college or university, especially an elite school like Stanford. I also think West Valley CC is a state-sponsored school, while Stanford is private. That would likely complicate any formal partnership.

I don’t know anything about this kid but a quick google indicates he played at Oaks Christian. So, a kid from a power California high school water polo team plays a 5th high school year against kids on the East coast and dominates? Is that supposed to be impressive?

Yes. If you are good enough to get into Stanford who then tells you to spend a year or two at West Valley CC while they hold open your enrollment spot, you’ll probably get accepted to West Valley CC without too much issue.

No, not impressive, but he was able to train, play and start college with one more year of training under his belt without losing a year of NCAA eligibility. So if the CC players no longer lose a year or two of eligibility kids can use CC in the same way Tom Leggett used an east coast boarding school. They also can get GE requirements out of the way. And to Marcos point some CC’s could work as a pipeline to D1 programs if they come up with some sort of agreement. That being said, this has only been allowed for one football player so I dont expect it to be a free for all for 1-3 years.

Laney College, College of Marin and Clovis CC have acceptance rates to Cal of 43%-45%!!!

I’m sure Steve Carrera would be more than happy to become Cal’s feeder program.

Yes and this football player is a quarterback, who sued the NCAA so he could have one more year, since he stands to make lots of $$ through NIL money. Most sports won’t get any or much NIL money, so that 5th year of playing water polo or lacrosse for example, may not be worth much, other than to keep playing because you love the sport

I don’t believe there is a spring portal for men’s water polo. the way I understand it, guys have until today to enter the portal. That act, allows them to start talking to other coaches. They do not need to lock in a transfer before the window closes, no one else can enter. I have heard of one waiting on admin to get back from the holidays before he finds out how much aid he can get. If he gets enough he transfers, if not he stays. Most coaches would want the new guys to transfer before next semester in order to start practicing with the team and play with them during the off season club season that starts in Feb.

It probably does not work exactly like this. It is not very likely that 40% of graduates of these community colleges are ready for UC. However, there is a clear path for California CC students to transfer to UC. AFAIK, they need to maintain a certain GPA ( at least 3.0? but it could be higher depending on a major) and take appropriate courses.

Is there a deadline to complete the transfer? The deadline is only to enter?

I have not been able to find a deadline to complete. The way I read it, entering the portal allows you to start talking to coaches, there is not info on when you must finish talking to coaches.

I’m not sure if it has changed this year, but I am certain there was a spring portal for men’s polo last year.

The spring window is May 1 - 15.

That should be an active portal

yes sorry I did not read that correctly, it looks like there is a window may 1-15 for all fall sports except football, who has a separate window in the spring.

Unless a kid is looking for a six-year college water career–and maybe a few potential national team players are each year–I don’t think many will want to cool their heels at a CC when they could be getting on with their degree at a top-notch school.

That would be short-sighted. A player could knock out their GE at CC and end up with not only an undergrad but also a Masters from the “top-notch school” in their six-year college water career. The student-athlete would essentially be getting a Master’s degree at Stanford for the price of 4 semesters of state community college.

Maybe. Water polo aside, how many students whose goal is Stanford undergraduate and masters degrees are choosing to start at a community college? I’m sure there are a few, but Stanford accepts less than 2% of transfer applicants, and has strict limits on how transfer credits can be applied to its undergrad GE requirements.
