UC Merced - Bega out (both men & women) UC Santa Barbara - posted - may just be a formality - have to open it up since Myall was appointed mid-year? (I’m guessing) Brown - Addison out, Mercado stepped in to finish the year.
Any others?
Any ideas on who’s applying? - Brown could be interesting as it’s Ivy league - would be appealing to someone with HS aged kids - free tuition?
once the person is identified, what’s wrong with setting compensation based on education, experience, skills relevant to the role, AND equal pay regardless of things like age or gender?
The only candidates are people that already live in San Diego / La Jolla area and have housing already established. UCSD has been notorious for paying low wages - quick look at zillow rentals has cheapest apartment in La Jolla at just under $4k/month.
I expect someone that already lives in Del Mar, La Jolla or North SD to get the spot as they’re the only ones that can afford it.
I guess they could commute, do you know which current coaches do? I don’t think OC to SD 2x/day for $80k is worth it, but others may disagree.
You can look up what UCSD pays here: https://transparentcalifornia.com/
It’s worth noting the head coaches at UC Davis, LMU, Fullerton, SJSU, SDSU, USC, UCLA and others all went to “locals” - where relocation wasn’t an issue.
You realize Adam Wright lives nowhere near UCLA right? Is it possible a coach could have a spouse that also works? Do you think all the teachers at Torrey Pines High school live in La Jolla? Jovan had a wife that made good money and he lived 20 plus miles from USC. Do you think the Pepperdine coaches live in Malibu?
I thought Adam lived in the Manhattan Beach ballpark, not a great commute on the 405 but better than driving in from Riverside or something- but besides the point - When Brandon left UCLA and they were looking for a women’s coach - who did they hire? Someone from NorCal? from the East Coast? or did they take someone already there that didn’t need relocation?
La Jolla is a beautiful place, maybe the lifestyle and climate make up for less $$.
Recent memory of Head coaches, I see relocations by: Mich, Brown, Fresno, Cal
Taking the local: IU (AC), ASU (AC), UOP (Men HC), Davis (AC), UCSB (AC), UCLA (Men HC), USC (AC), Hawaii (AC), Fullerton (LMU HC lived local), LMU (prior AC), SDSU (AC), LB (AC)
I’m sure there’s others, but my point is the trend demonstrates a preference for locals
I’m certain that Adam commuted for many years before moving to Westwood. I believe he lived in Seal Beach for possibly even a decade + (?) before moving to Westwood.
