Damato to JSerra

Queue the music. This will take the already crazy recruiting wars to the nuclear level. Let the game of musical chairs begin!

This is a huge get for JSerra and should add more parity to the region and the trinity league. Though, I don’t think he will have much success in the first year. Girls who are thinking about transferring will need to pass the CIF smell test of following a coach, who in this case, happens to be the Director of ODP Academy (which seems like a major conflict of interest).

The incoming freshman class should be strong, which will set them up for a good run starting in year two of his tenure.

It is a conflict of interest but it seems as if nobody at USAWP cares. The list is long.

USAWP may not be concerned with it, but CIF will look into any transfer, specially if other coaches point out the path that a certain player took, to get to jserra, specially in the first year

Totally disagree! Personal experience with the CIF process re: transfer. The experience was incredibly disappointing. The CIF process came off as rigid, overreaching, and insensitive regarding the player’s case.

Did you threaten a lawsuit? That seems to be the ticket to get them to back off

who/Where are the incoming freshman from?

I didn’t have a list of girls in mind, just a general thought that JSerra will now be a top consideration for 8th grade girls who are deciding on high school. CIF doesn’t penalize anyone coming in as a freshman. I would imagine that any girl in the development pipeline is now a possibility, ESPECIALLY if Damato stays on as Academy Director.

Have the transfer rules changed? If not a transfer sits out the early part of the season basically missing the Newport tournament Yes girls on Set will get additional scrutiny but the penalty is not missing a season.

Which is why it is a total conflict of interest!

If the transfer is not “athletically motivated”, it’s a 50% of season sit-out period.

If the transfer is “athletically motivated”, it’s a full season sit out.

I have heard that they will be trying to move the Newport tournament back a week, and moving up the Villa Park classic, so that transfers can play in the Newport invite. We’ll see if it happens.

On the girls side, the Newport Holiday Cup, at least on the last few years, has always been held a few days after the sit out period ended. Sometimes by one day. Plus Newport uses mostly homegrown talent, so the incentive to move tournament out one week, to accommodate other school’s transfers, would be pretty low. Plus you could then be encroaching on the Santa Barbara TOC.
2023 holiday cup was Dec 29th and 30th
2024 Holiday cup was Jan 3rd and 4th
