Cathedral Catholic has 5 this year, too. Three are 10th graders.

There is a 9th grader on the list. Hunter Coleman for Menlo. I’ve never seen him play. Is he good?

Looks like he plays Club for Stanford. He’s a right handed Center.

Good catch, WaPo.

Center Hunter Coleman scored 141 goals in his freshman season at Menlo. If he continues on this trajectory, he will have multiple “Big 4” offers by his junior year.

Kai Kaneko went from 2023 HM to 1st team. Very impressive.

Any idea how the team is determined, and why is Hawaii included?

It appears that they take all the All-CIF open team players and split them up in to the first two or three teams. Then, all the DI kids make the next set up teams. Some d2 and beyond get slotted in with some “at large” entries from teams that did well in the tourneys but the player didn’t make all CIF.

Could be, @gibson. For the San Diego Section honorees, they went with CIF Open Division first team selections plus the first two listed on the second team (12 total, of which 3 are seniors, 5 are juniors, and 4 are sophomores).

@cmbreeze. Incredible there are only 3 seniors in the Top12! The Teams are listed by votes received which is why the Top 2 on the 2nd Team got selected. Where the teams finish determines how many players a team gets on each team. Similar to JO’s.

Actually this looks decent compared to other years. Last year was ridiculous considering some of the kids that were on the Top Tier Teams. It’s an incredibly flawed, yet difficult system of voting when you’re just taking kids off of lists and not actually going out and watching games. it appears that some coaches have more influence than others when it comes to voting as well. Then there are high school coaches who don’t care about this stuff. Same with Junior Olympic AA voting. Too many kids on winning teams make the cut. In a perfect world they would have media voting as well.

Hunter Coleman made the Development National Team last summer and will certainly be on the Cadet National Team. In fact the Class of 2010 is the next great class in my opinion…lots of size and talent. Hunter is a gifted center with long arms, has a great demeanor for the game, and plays with moxie. I watched him last weekend lead his talented Stanford 16s team against CIU 18s. In a narrow loss he dominated.

Kai Kaneko is arguably the best all-around attacker in the class. Great demeanor, skilled shooter, and plays both ends. Not overly dynamic in any aspect of the game but very few, if any, weaknesses.

Yes, my point was that you have to play on an open team to be placed on one of the top teams. The unquestioned best player could be in a team that played in D1 and they won’t make the top teams. It’s not a ranking at all, but it’s certainly not a ranking of kids across divisions. Just like JOs. The best player may finish on the 8th place team and will be 2nd team or HM.
