Do you happen to have the most recent version of this? thanks!
Gang- just to be clear, at the SB TOC, both Charlotte & Lucy were playing when MD beat San Marcos. Also at the Holiday Cup, when MD beat SM. MD did lose to Newport 11-10, but had many chances to win. Credit to Newport girls for making shots in OT. MD had a rare game of missing 25 shots. That will not happen again. Was a funky night - can happen to any team, any athletes, in any sport. MD/Bishops game, credit to the Bishops girls. MD was without starting set guard (as mentioned), and #1 scoring attacker in early 3rd Q (fouled out). Down by 2, MD came back led by Delaney Hook with 5 goals (3 in 4thQ), plus a field block, to put game into OT. From there MD played excellent D and scored 2 goals. Strong W for MD.
These games are fantastic for girls on both teams to gain valuable experience in stressful tense games.
Has been an exciting season for sure.
Good point 5Titans. In the MD/Bishop’s game MD overcame some adversity. Bishop’s also overcame adversity in the 1st quarter losing one of their top scorers to a heavy blow to the head. Also, their starting center defender who controls the defense received two early exclusions. Both girls sat out till the 4th quarter. Bishop’s doesn’t have MD’s depth and those losses were a lot to overcome. They almost did.

Went to the rematch of San Clemente vs Beckman. The score at San Clemente was 8-6 SC. Today was a different game. Beckman hit it hard the second half. Final 11-8 beckman. Like I said I’d put money on this being the D1 final.
Don’t know if you saw the Playoff Bulletin for Southern Section but the 2nd and 3rd Place teams in the Open Division brackets play a crossover game to get into the Semis instead of just giving the top 2 to cross over in the Semis:
“This tournament bracket will be played in a “pool play” game format. Teams will play through their pool with the fourth-place team in each group being dropped and the first-place team securing a semi-final game appearance. The second and third place finishers in each bracket will crossover (2A v. 3B and 2B v. 3A), winners advancing to the semifinal. If a tie breaking procedure is needed to determine the winner in any pool 1) Goal differential 2) Goals allowed and 3) Goals scored will be used (in that order).”
Does anyone have the updated rankings. It is really frustrating that CIF posts updated rankings for Soccer and Basketball but wont do the same for water polo.
So is it clarified how many teams will be in this Open Division? Boys had 12 teams, after having just 8 teams in it for years
CIF stated 8 for girls
No new rankings were sent to coaches this week
Any thoughts on which 8 teams will make the CIF-SS Open Division Championships?
- Mater Dei
- OLu
- Newport
- Oaks Christian
- San Marcos
- Long Beach Wilson
- Foothill
- Laguna
These are the 8 strongest teams and pretty much in that order, but the Massey rankings they are using, or whatever the point ranking system is called, could throw a twist into this list.
That list looks pretty spot on to me. I was not sure who would nab the last spot between Laguna and CDM.
Laguna would have to take the 8th spot given that they beat CDM for 9th place at the Tournament of Champions in SB just over a week ago. CDM also did not play in the Newport Invite.
Laguna also beat Foothill this past weekend.
CDM beat Laguna twice this season.
I am not sure if MaxPrep has the new rating system calculated correctly, but they have
- MD
- OLu
- Newport
- San Marcos
- LB WIlson
- Oaks Christian
- CDM
- (Bishop’s)
- San Clemente
- Palos Verdes
- Foothill
- Beckman
- Jserra
- Laguna
It would be crazy if they go off of this. I think the margin of the score is factored in and wins/Losses seem more important than the strength of the schedule. In my opinion, this is not better for the game
and these are dated 1/24/25 so as of last Friday and may not include Fridays games
