Girls 2024-2025 Rankings

…and they still beat LB Wilson

JSerra/ Beckman score is incorrect. JSerra beat Beckman 6-5. I know it is listed incorrectly on the CIF website.

If the girls season follows the same format boys did for playoffs, it might be worth doing a ranking that reflects it or keep the honorable mentions in a rotation that notes they could be included in the 12 team field

After Bill Barnett Holiday Cup

  1. Mater Dei
  2. OLU
  3. Newport
  4. Oaks
  5. Bishop’s
  6. San Marcos
  7. LB Wilson
  8. Foothill
  9. CDM
  10. Laguna

Boys and Girls Basketball and Soccer have in season rankings based on scores and all we have to go on are Max Preps and polocoach?

I get that it’s different sports and with the way teams schedule games with the breaks in the middle of season it is hard but nothing from CIF at all? Is it really that hard for transparency? If the issue is non-reporting of scores, then maybe some type of strike or punishment system needs to be put in place?

I know we all have our rankings in our heads but it would be nice to see where the teams fall right now according to CIF instead of all this guestimate work.

Can someone explain why CIF abandoned the weekly polls in the first place? I thought it was determined by a committee of coaches?

Because, technically, they don’t have any divisions to report on right now. It used to be done by the division representatives, two coaches. But since divisions won’t get decided until the playoffs there’s nothing those representatives can report on.

Basketball hasn’t had Divisions and we still get their rankings, at least which division they would fall into. How hard would it to be to release the computer rankings every two weeks? Why can’t they release the rankings like they did at the beginning of every year? All it was was the computer rankings with cutoffs at a certain point to make divisions consist of 24, 32, or 40+ teams.

I know some teams ranked high won’t qualify because they won’t get one of their league’s AQs and finish below a .500 record, but shouldn’t we at least be able to see where everyone is at sometime before the “bracket reveal” on 2/1?

From CIF:

Coaches and ADs,

Attached are some metrics based on reported information (THROUGH 1/6/25, LAST MONDAY) as well as the score report input to arrive at those numbers. As you can see from the schedules and scores document, there are “TBA” scores, blanks, perhaps incorrect scores, this is raw, unweighted data. Please check the second attachment for accuracy and get with your AD or Admin to get those corrected IN CIFSSHOME. Please do not reply to this email with corrections as I cannot change them for you; it must be done in your school’s account. Continue posting your scores to ensure a smooth transition from our regular season to playoff tournament. The accuracy of power rankings is dependent on ALL GAMES and ALL SCORES being posted accurately. The schedule and score page is in an excel document. Arrange those columns by team so you can search yours making sure you (and your opponents) have entered information accurately.

The third attachment is a “cheat sheet” for water polo misconducts. In water polo, there are only two categories for players, “misconduct” and “flagrant misconduct”, and one for coaches and spectators, “red card”. Should one of these distinctions be assigned to any player/coach/spectator on your team THERE IS A ONE OR MORE SUBSEQUENT GAME SUSPENSION THAT MUST BE SERVED. Officials are charged with adjudicating the NFHS playing rules of the game while you, as a coach and/or AD are tasked with knowing the CIF rules. Do not ask an official if your player needs to sit an additional game as the officials are not versed in CIF conduct expectations, THAT IS YOUR JOB. The Statewide Sportsmanship Bylaw applies to your athletes, the coaches and even your spectators. If ejected players, coaches, or spectators knowingly or unknowingly participate/attend a game for which they are ineligible, the team will forfeit, and suspensions will still need to be served. I cannot stress enough…do not ask the official (the NFHS Rule book doesn’t address CIF rules), contact your athletic administrator and/or keep the student/coach/player away from competition until you can get a definitive answer. Know also, it is the call of the official in the game that is the catalyst for game suspension, not the presence of an ejection report.

The girls Open Division WILL be an eight-team tournament with a TBD format. Playoff dates for all divisions, other than the Open, are in the “Season Preview” available on our website at cifss.org. The playoff bulletin will be out toward the end of this week.

Good luck moving forward with your season. Happy New Year to all and be safe!

Great battle today between San Clemente and Beckman. San Clemente dominated the first half but beckman fought back. 8-6 final. If you ask me I’d put money on that being the D1 final.

My updated Rankings after Santa Barbara TOC

  1. Mater Dei
  2. OLU
  3. Newport
  4. San Marcos
  5. Oaks
  6. Bishop’s
  7. LB Wilson
  8. Foothill
  9. Laguna
  10. CDM

I agree that both San Clemente and Beckman will be in the mix for the Division 1 title, but I would have to include either CDM or Laguna, as one of them probably will not make the Open Division.

Looks like a very fair assessment of the top 10. I would just swap Bishop’s and LB Wilson since LB Wilson finished the tournament ahead of Bishop’s. Oaks played both LB Wilson and Bishop’s in Santa Barbara and although I feel Bishop’s had a tough go with the whistle against Oaks, I still think LB Wilson presented a much tougher win for Oaks relative to their game against Bishop’s.

I wish we could get an LB Wilson Bishop’s matchup but its unlikely to happen. LB is not in the Newport Invite. My reasoning was that LB Wilson lost to San Marcos @ Villa Park and Bishop’s beat San Marcos by 3 in the finals.

That’s my understanding as well - LB Wilson, San Marcos, and Bishop’s have already played in their maximum 3 tournaments, so they won’t be at the Newport Invite. San Marcos is a tale of 2 teams when their 2 best players are there - for example, Charlotte Raisin and Lucy Haaland-Ford left for Greece on Saturday and that played a big role in San Marcos’ relatively lopsided losses to MD and Newport on Saturday in Santa Barbara. As I have been told, either one or both of Charlotte and Lucy didn’t play in that loss against Bishop’s because they were writing the SAT. When Charlotte and Lucy are there, they’re a really tough match-up, notwithstanding having a field player playing goalie. Bethany King, a USAWP Academy field player has been nothing short of fantastic as a goalie for San Marcos.

So, both Lucy & Charlotte were missing when Bishop’s beat San Marcos. They both were also missing when San Marcos beat LB Wilson. Bishop’s has only played Villa Park and TOC. They will be in the Newport Invite. SM and LB Wilson have played in 3 Tourneys already.

Wow! That should throw a wrinkle in the rankings. Nice statement win for sophomore transfer Emerson Mulvey. But also worth noting that MD did not have Maggie Ryan, who is playing in Greece with the SNT.

Mater Dei came back from an 8-10 deficit against Bishop’s to tie it 10-10 in regulation and win in OT 12-10

Oaks lost by 1 to OLu on Friday - OLu was missing 2 of their top players with the senior national team in Greece.
