The benefits package through my employer includes a FSA/HSA (Flexible Spending Account / Health Savings Account). It can be used to pay for health-related expenses, and it is use-it-or-lose it. If I don’t spend the money in the account by the end of the year then whatever balance remains in the account goes back to my employer.
It turns out that money can be used to pay for personal trainers if a doctor will author a note deeming use of a personal trainer to be medically necessary. The note I got from my kid’s doctor reads:
To Whom It May Concern,
XXXXXX is currently a patient under my care. He was last seen today. I believe it is medically necessary for him to get daily exercise in order to help reduce his BMI with a personal trainer.
Dr. XXXXXXXX
It doesn’t have to be BMI. If you search the internet for using FSA/HSA to pay for trainers and membership fees to health clubs, you’ll find a number of other issues that can be substituted.
The letter containing the above text was accepted by my plan’s FSA/HSA administrator. Next, you’ll need invoices for the medically necessary training expenses being reimbursed. I created something generic in Excel and include the Venmo transaction number to prove I did make a payment that needed to be reimbursed.
That is it. Maybe it could be used to cover club dues or tournament entry fees. I personally have only used it to cover the costs of private coaching sessions.
