Water Polo Stats

I’m here as well. And agree. It’s frustrating for sure. The reffing is also… interesting.

6-8 is not to blame. The humans entering the data are too blame. The more stats you want to see the more kids you will be relying in to get it right. I have seen futures games where every goal was given to one cap number because they were too lazy to select the right cap number. A picture of the stat book is usually more accurate. The fosh struggles as well but it is alll due to one person trying to enter everything that happens. You really need one person doing shots and goals. One person doing blocks and steals. One person doing penalties and exclusions. But are you willing to pay more for club games? At what age group does it start to matter? 16s?

I’ll add to it that the 6-8 scoring is way easier for kids to use than a hand written book and while the stats may be missed here and there a hand written book will only have goals and exclusions. You’d be surprised too how confusing and sloppy a hand written book by kids is too so trying to figure out what happens needs a cypher.

So yeah I would say be a part of the solution — get 6-8 going on every pool deck so everyone gets better at doing it and we all get the best stats from all games. It’s way way easier than a hand written book and we get way more information.

Agreed, stats are only as good as the person entering the information. Garbage in, garbage out. I was in Fresno for Polo Palooza this weekend and I would suggest the Fosh got it +90% right (which is really good) - but there were some assists and DEX’s, etc. missed. At the HS and club-level, it’s hard (and maybe unreasonable) to ask kids and parents to get it right since some are both volunteering and not always proficient in all-things water polo.

My earlier remark was about the stat collected on 6-8 site at the Regional ODP. I have no clue whether the data was entered by 6-8 or directly by USA WP. Anyway, I observed some improvement on the collection and resolution of data collected through out the second and third day. Adding a real-time stat box to the GOLS live stream is a cool idea. I am not sure about the importance and feasibility of collecting high resolution stat in every tournament, but I expect a relatively accurate picture at the level of Cadets (16u) and Youth (18u).

As an aside, the event was well ran, albeit with too little social media coverage from USA WP. I did not see many of the national team coaches on deck or NCAA coaches. It is sad that anything outside of CA get very little attention from the ‘core.’ Not a great way to grow the sport or showing respect to the 1000 or so athletes that make a great effort going though USA WP camps and regional ODP.
